We all (or at least almost all of us) know how this works with the Trump administration. He appoints someone who is not competent for the job and then ends up sucking at the job. That person then gets replaced by someone less competent for the job. The bigger problem with Trump 2.0 vs. Trump 1.0 is that he’s starting with a lower bar than he even started with in his first administration.

Hegseth Said to Have Shared Attack Details in Second Signal Chat

The defense secretary sent sensitive information about strikes in Yemen to an encrypted group chat that included his wife and brother, people familiar with the matter said.

“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared detailed information about forthcoming strikes in Yemen on March 15 in a private Signal group chat that included his wife, brother and personal lawyer, according to four people with knowledge of the chat.

Some of those people said that the information Mr. Hegseth shared on the Signal chat included the flight schedules for the F/A-18 Hornets targeting the Houthis in Yemen — essentially the same attack plans that he shared on a separate Signal chat the same day that mistakenly included the editor of The Atlantic.

Mr. Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer, a former Fox News producer, is not a Defense Department employee, but she has traveled with him overseas and drawn criticism for accompanying her husband to sensitive meetings with foreign leaders.

Mr. Hegseth’s brother Phil and Tim Parlatore, who continues to serve as his personal lawyer, both have jobs in the Pentagon, but it is not clear why either would need to know about upcoming military strikes aimed at the Houthis in Yemen. …”
I’m uncertain as to why the SecDef, much less the other yahoos on the FIRST Signal chat need to know particulars of the attack.

Authorize the attack? In this case, yes. We’re not at war with the Houthis. I’d rather civilians control new attacks.

If we’re at war? I’d rather professional military personnel determine the when and how of attacks and limit knowledge of said attacks to a tiny few before the attacks happen.

Hegseth is not a military professional.

It’s almost as if poor Pete wasn’t qualified for this job. If only we would have known.
Who could have guessed that hiring a Fox News host, alcoholic womanizer, and accused sexual assaulter instead of a military or administrative specialist to run the Defense Department might be a disaster? We have an administration that consists almost entirely of internet trolls, drug-addled conspiracy loons, Fox News talking heads and blowhards with little to no administrative or government experience, professional wrestling CEOs, spineless right-wing former Senators, and extreme bigots and incompetent crackpots of all types. Just thirty or forty years ago many of these people would still be confined to the very fringes of our political and social life where they belong, and would have little to no influence on government policy. It's as if we've given Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn, George Wallace, Jesse Helms, and Rush Limbaugh the keys to total control of the federal government and then just turned them loose. And only now are some starting to wonder why things aren't going so well. Insanity.

And the biggest problem is that 99% of the electorate has absolutely zero clue how the government works or why. So these fools will be allowed to run amuck with little to no consequences (as we're seeing)

Weird position— that Trump stands behind Hegseth even though the “entire Pentagon” is against Hegseth and your policies?

Dangerous position, too. Unless you’re planning a Cultural Revolution, pissing off 20,000 people with experience planning and executing mass violence seems “smart” in a “I like playing with downed power lines.” sort of manner.

I think it makes sense. Guy is coming in to cut some sacred cows and hopefully, although not likely, cut the defense budget. He's going to get push back for that.

But I think the sending signal chats to unauthorized people should be enough to bring him down. I think there are plenty of people that could go in and slash the budget.

It’s not just the signal chats. It’s the fact that the entire department is a chaotic mess under him.

In most contexts, when the entire organization is revolting against the folks in charge, we call that poor leadership.

But hey, Hegseth gave an unenforceable, unobservable promise to stop drinking to Joni Ernst, so you know. I can't believe they confirmed him.
