I have no doubt that some Republicans would like to make marriage decisions at a state, not national, level.

There's also a reason this isn't big news- it means nothing. It's "for show".

Remember when Republicans were voting every other day to repeal Obamacare? This is as meaningless as that. Probably more meaningless.
Some things should not be at a state level because it's ridiculous to have different rules in each state. Marriage is one of those.

Why should one state be able to tell my child that they cannot marry while another say it's ok?

Marriage already is at a state level, subject to constitutional restrictions. What states can't do is refuse to recognize marriages in other states, because of the Full Faith And Credit clause. Who knows -- maybe that will be a new target for the jabroni right, but as of now, that's the state of play as I understand it.

Some jurisdictions allow for remote marriages. Those are often used for people to get married while deployed abroad. I don't know if they have any residency requirements, or if it's like Vegas-on-zoom.

True, I understand this. Might not have been the best subject to make a point on.

My belief is that some laws need to be consistent across all states.

A better example might be the issues we have with guns, where criminals buy guns in the states with laxed laws to use to commit crimes in states with very strict laws.

Does that make sense?

Although I know that most posters here already know this, I'll keep saying it - anybody who thinks that Trump 2.0 isn't going to go after LGBTQ rights is fooling themselves. They'll start with transgenders because they are the most disliked and vulnerable and easy target, but it will gradually move to a broader attack on the entire community.

Trump repeals rule allowing transgender troops to serve in military

The executive order clears the way for a new ban.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday night that repeals a provision allowing transgender troops to serve in the military, part of a wide-ranging effort to end Biden-era policies his first day in office.

Trump issued a ban during his first administration that prevented transgender troops from serving, which former President Joe Biden eliminated. While Trump did not institute a new ban, the repeal of the Biden-era executive order clears the way for one.

And he's done a lot more than just ban transgenders from the military. Today marked the beginning of a broad attack on the very notion that transgender identity even exists (or should exist) legally and within the federal government. Which is pretty much what most people here thought would happen, but that doesn't make it any less disturbing.

Yep. This admin essentially wants to remove the transgender community from public life. It's abhorrent and shameful.

Their cruelty will not stop with easily punched down upon demographics. Cruelty doesn't exhaust, it simply finds new targets, because the insecurity driving the cruelty rarely gets addressed. Certainly, said insecurity will not get addressed with this admin.

Mind you, Stephen Miller and Heritage ghouls are largely doing much of this because of a combo of anti-social personality disorder and/or because other kids didn't like them (some are simply brainwashed by religion).

Folks, be kind to kids. Every Stephen Miller or Elon Musk had an opportunity to be positive impact, as oppose to deleterious, on society, yet some inflection point was missed or mishandled.

Lots of Hitler comparisons coming from the left. Not sure that is the best strategy given the fallout from the election.

Lots of fascist shit coming from the right. Not sure that's the best thing given it's fascist shit.

And if you want to talk Elon Musk doing Nazi salutes there's a thread for that.
