Right, they need to allow people with aid, and the proper survival training in to deliver the aid. I do not understand why they wouldn't. I know people who have been blocked and/or turned around trying to get aid to family members who they have actually heard from. It doesn't make sense to me. Let people trying to help in, the fact they aren't is ridiculous. Some I know are bypassing the blocked areas and going around it but that could be more dangerous, possibly.

Exactly. Also there are people who are just loading up their cars and driving west. Where are they going? What are they doing? How are they going to distribute supplies to the people that need them? Folks like this, though there is goodwill involved, just clog up the roadways and complicate things. There's got to be some organization in the chaos.

Also, why can't people be grateful for BOTH public (government) and private assistance? It doesn't have to be either/or. I just want to take all these stupid anti-government people and stick them in some third world country with truly corrupt government and see how they like it then.

I'm so bothered by all this nonsense, I am about to throw my phone into the toilet so I can't read anything on social media anymore. It's a shitshow and it's worthless.

And I hope that the rest of the country is not paying as much attention to all this BS so that it doesn't dramatically affect this election, because I'm telling you there is no way North Carolina is gonna go blue after all the bullshit lies that are getting distributed right now.

I am 100% certain the people you’re referring to here do not have “the proper survival training” to deliver aid. I’m sure they think they do, but they don’t. The professionals need to handle this, and they’ve been deployed in force across WNC. So again, please be part of the solution here, not part of the problem. While your intentions may be noble, you’re part of the problem at the moment.

The good news is that most of the folks taking this BS seriously are folks who were already not going to vote for Dems at any level.

Unless something huge comes out from legit sources, I wouldn't be too concerned about this having a big effect on the election.
 
If folks want to help, then gather supplies and deliver them to a trained entity that knows how to handle this. Billy Bob and his youth group are just going to cause more issues trying to hike up the mountains rescuing folks, who then need to be rescued themselves. Let professionals do the professional work, and those of us that can't, can help gather essential goods for them.

The crazy thing is this SHOULD have an impact on the election -- for Kamala and good governance. The response to this catastrophe so far has been a great example of what we can do when public resources support private compassion. Russian trolls and their unwitting followers in the US are trying their best to tell a different story, but we don't need to allow that to happen. The suffering is undeniable and unavoidable, but the result of this disaster can be a triumph of America at its best. We just have to keep those who would tear us down from carrying the narrative.

Problem is, there are people needing and asking for help, no one is helping them, people who have heard from them are trying to help them and are being stopped. That is the part that doesn't make sense to me. At least let people in to help if you aren't or can't do it.

If it's false, multiple people I know, who don't know each other are lying to me about having their vehicles and off road vehicles blocked from entering around the Banner Elk area with supplies.

I'd actually be ok with this if we had a way to track the names and locations of such folks and if they get themselves in trouble they're denied assistance to get back out of wherever they are. You want to try to drive on washed out roads and then hike supplies in for 5 miies? Go for it, but rescue workers are already more than overloaded and you'll receive no further assistance from this point forward. You wreck your vehicle or break your leg or have a heart attack trying to accomplish your task...you're on your own to get yourself out.

But since we know that there's no good way to track such people nor the public will to deny them services, the best we can do is prevent them from putting themselves in dangerous situations.

I was speaking specifically on the "FEMA is denying help to Republican areas or stealing supplies" or whatever other BS is coming from the right-wing misinformation centers.

I hope you're correct that the overall takeaway when all of this is done is to show what can be accomplished when we all come together - including government resources - to assist one area in its time of need.

Ok Eringhaus, I'm willing to be wrong. Help me understand. Where is the breakdown of help? Who are the people calling to get help and they're not receiving it? How can we problem solve to make this better? I'm all about trying to call something out if it's not working, but you gotta help me understand HOW it's not working. If you know directly people that are being turned away and they still want to help, tell them to check local town or government websites, church websites, etc. to see where they can go to provide aid. Seems like it's a very structurally difficult place to drive around in -- it doesn't seem safe. Like there might actually be good reasons for them to stop traffic, other than *I'm from the government and I just want to f up everything*

I hope so. I’ve been spending too much time on social media, being inundated with the despair and the crazy… think I’ve lost a little perspective.

I have seen more positive posts vs the conspiracies - and that includes more moderate people.

I am sure the MAGAs hate gov help and will trash it. But ignore them. This is not coming across like Katrina

Good to hear.

Just want to let the record reflect that I just want people to actually get the help that they need. If the government response isn’t good, it needs to be noted and corrected. There should be accountability. But I don’t want there to be false rumors spread around just to hurt the democrats’ election chances.
