Maybe he thought he'd play a larger role at Bama than he did. But seems like the obvious result joining Nelson who was going to play some 5

He was essentially Nick Pringle with a Nigerian accent (who is joining his 3rd SEC school in 3 years)

Just don't see how you pass on an "all the mins you can handle" role when you are trying to show NBA scouts something
I mean, doesn't that tell you something about Hubert's rep with certain agents/players?

Cliff Omoruyi would have been extremely helpful to UNC last year. But he chooses to go to Bama for (reportedly) less money.

What do you think I should be taking from that?

If it's about Cal, it's not that I don't think they have the alumni with the financial wherewithal to fund high-level NIL, it's that I find it unlikely that their alums care enough, on the whole, to fund athletic success with said money. Cal is the weirdest large, especially public, school I've ever seen with regard to the way its alums feel about (major) sports.

I just think it is interesting. It is not specifically about Cal, although Cal does appear frequently on the list.

That said, it doesn't matter what *most* alums think about sports. You only need 1 of those 12 undergrad alum billionaires to like sports.

That’s true about only needing one billionaire alum to make a difference. Maybe Cal will find their one? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yeah, mid-tier NBA players will not fund NIL. That needs to come from the Jordans and ultra rich alums. Of course, if having billionaire alums were all it took to be successful at sports, we should expect the Ivy league to start crushing it soon, along with Stanford and Cal.

Don’t the Ivies still expect their athletes to be students?

So when the highest offer wasn’t chosen, was it still competitive? And when a lower offer was chosen, it wasn’t competitive?
If you are offered as much or more than the final accepted taken deal I’d call that competitive.

There may be other intangibles that factor in as well but for the most part the highest offer wins.

Do they outperform when signing free agents, or are they just smarter?

The one team with an advantage appears to be the Lakers, because media industry. I've not seen any real evidence that home market plays much of a role in those leagues. One supposes that it rules some places out -- it's been forever since Indiana signed a top free agent -- but for the most part, I think money mostly rules.

The system will likely change, I agree, but at the moment, I don't see UNC having a significant competitive edge due to historical success. Imagine being a 17 year old kid. Alabama offers you $2M. UNC offers $1.8 million but you get to play on court where Antawn Jamison, Tyler Hansbrough and Vince Carter once plied their trades. I'd imagine the response would be "who's that -- I'll take the money."
Another factor in college is that for many of these guys this is their big payday. They have 4 years to max it out.

But then was the lower offer that the player accepted also competitive? Or did the player accept a non-competitive offer?

I sure hope student visa issues don't negatively impact Luka.

Of course, I don't want it to negatively impact any international students.
While nothing is off the table with Trump, I suspect that a call from Thom Tillis/Bill Belichick to Marco Rubio would get the Visa issued ASAP.

Did anyone else read Sherrell's post on Luka? Am I letting my pessimistic side come through too much, or is there a decent chance that he doesn't play for UNC?
The only thing that could be a real issue is UNC admissions, and I’m not very worried about that. The visa and NCAA issues are not a real concern.
