Can’t speak for most but I’ve been in construction for 30 years in NC, and the perception is that illegals suppress wages. Contractors using illegal labor put pressure on contractors who want to hire legals to cur costs as well.
And construction isn’t like farming, Americans want to do these jobs but not for shit wages. I used to blame the illegal, now I blame Republicans mostly since in my experience they always seem to be the ones owning the businesses full of illegals.

I don't know about construction but I very much doubt there are many Americans who want to be roofers.

For the most part, migrants don't much affect wages but construction might be an exception.

Why in the world would anyone care about the folks who are here working their asses off to make our country better, and to provide a better life for their families. Just today at our house, I had a yard crew, a cleaning crew, a crew installing new hardwood floors, and a crew installing new carpet- not one single one of them spoke English as a primary language. The work they did, however, was spectacular. I don’t know their immigration status and I couldn't possibly care any less. They’re just good, hardworking people trying to make an honest living and doing jobs that Americans like me won’t touch with a ten-foot pole.

False in every case. Have you ever seen where undocumented workers live? They are not causing a housing shortage. Edit to add that there is an effect in some of those cases, but the characterization as "overcrowd schools" is generally not correct. The negative impact is very small. The positive impact is not very high but it's considerably higher than the negative.

The vast majority of blue collar workers face more competition from Mexicans actually in Mexico, in light of NAFTA.

Most Republicans would have been perfectly happy if you would have just secured the border. No one would be wanting to mass deport illegals and we probably would be discussing amnesty for them and the Dreamers in particular. I'd be perfectly fine if we deported the criminals and gang members and everyone who rushed in the last 4 years and let everyone else stay - as long as they are good, taxpaying citizens.

Make your bed, lie in it. I would advise illegals to be safe and self deport (with $1k payment) else you could be heading to sunny South Sudan c/o a 6-3 Supreme Court decision. We can then let the good ones back in via legal immigration.

Pretty succinct. I'm more convinced every day that libs have a comprehension problem. They completely act as if there wasn't a clause in it that allowed a million illegals in BEFORE closing the border. Why is it necessary to let anyone in illegally before securing the border? Only libs can answer that because anyone with common sense would say close the border and then let in what needs to be let in without having to deal with a million illegals. They are to dim to see that is a big part of why they LOST. Again LOST the election. Wasn't to hard for trump to secure the border. Hire the right person and say secure the border. They may be eligible for certain emergency or limited services, and some state and local programs may offer assistance. But you knew that, I’m sure of it.

While I disagree with you, I at least understand where you’re coming from. But my rebuttal would be, don’t we have a big labor shortage in industries like construction, hospitality, service, etc.? If so, I think it’s shortsighted and self-defeating for us to deport or deny entry to the very folks who primarily fill those jobs. At the very, very least if we aren’t willing to grand amnesty or citizenship quickly, we should be handing out work visas like candy, IMO.

To me this is as simple of an issue as we face. Let's assume we do have a labor shortage for the sake of conversation.

Nobody can come in illegally
Everyone must register with ICE to be vetted to keep the bad ones out
There is no amnesty or cutting the line in place of those who have been doing things legally
We identify the needs
We grant work visas that provide the right to work for a given period of time with no benefits of citizenship and taxes must be paid
We can extend the work visas as needed
They check in with ICE periodically. Failure to do so will lead to deportation.

I am very much in favor of legal immigration and we do need these people. Im very much in favor of reworking the immigration laws to make it faster to become a citizen with harsh penalties for trying to illegally circumvent the process.
