I don't know about construction but I very much doubt there are many Americans who want to be roofers. Can’t speak for most but I’ve been in construction for 30 years in NC, and the perception is that illegals suppress wages. Contractors using illegal labor put pressure on contractors who want to hire legals to cur costs as well.
And construction isn’t like farming, Americans want to do these jobs but not for shit wages. I used to blame the illegal, now I blame Republicans mostly since in my experience they always seem to be the ones owning the businesses full of illegals.
For the most part, migrants don't much affect wages but construction might be an exception.
