How will a Trump presidency affect you?

Since I am an older white man it's not likely other than the stupidity I'll be fine. It's my daughter and nieces that I worry about. It's already really hard out there and I don't think the new administration is interested in helping young poor people. Hopefully my wife and I can help wherever we can. Just sad.

Anyone who is a teacher or college professor should be very worried, imo. I think Republicans are dead set on ending public ed as we know it and in forcing major changes to the curriculum of public schools and even public universities and colleges. And anyone who holds a position in a DEI office at a public university in a red state likely needs to be looking for another job, as that will be one of the first things to go. The only saving grace is that historically public ed in America has been controlled by the individual states, not the federal government. In North Carolina at least we will have a Dem governor with veto power and Dem Public Ed Superintendent, so hopefully the damage can be managed and limited. But if you're in a deep red state you're likely in big, big trouble. It wouldn't surprise me if Trump makes Chris Rufo some kind of "Education Czar" even while he guts the Department of Education.

That’s part of the reason behind Project 2025. Right-wing Republicans are not letting this opportunity evaporate. They’ve mapped out the transition and they’ll run it……whether Trump is on board (he will be) or not.

Agree. State's rights.
The State sets curriculum.
Fortunately, as you say, we here in NC just elected Mo Green and not the crazy Morrow woman. State DPI sets curriculum. After that, the local County school boards can implement book bans, fire the superintendent, etc. ... but that's it.

The Feds on the other hand can cut some federal funding, but that would be for things like Perkins, and other such acts for the disabled or disadvantaged. So... buckle up boys and girls...

My husband is a professor at NCSU in a non-stem department. I asked him today if he was worried about his job. He seemed fairly blasé and said, “It’s controlled by the state.” I am more concerned…

I am not ashamed to say that I will watch with glee when many of the Trump voters discover that they fucked around and found out.

I have one cousin who is about 53 and has type 2 diabetes. Went to prison. As far as I can tell he is now on disability. Almost lost a foot recently. Had a couple of gloating posts about Trump today.

Can’t wait to see him lose his disability check.

I hate it for all of the innocent people who will be harmed (and possibly myself) but people like him and most of the rural people I know will discover just how much their lifestyles are subsidized. F’ ‘em all.

I'm 57 and I was starting to plan to retire at the end of next year. No wife/kids, but so long as my mother is still alive, I'm tied to the US mainland. I might stay on at my position for an extra year or two. Even a steep decline in the stock market and a reduction in social security probably won't have a severe impact. I have a bit of a pension and even though I had planned on going to the market for health insurance, I do have an option to continue on my company's health plan after retirement so I have options. All in all, I'm in a really good position regardless of what Trump and his minions do.

Trump’s an inattentive idiot who wants to be in power.

Musk, Thiel, etc. are fascists.

I’m worried about programs for your son and similar people.
 
Trump wrecked health care during COVID and overturning Roe. I'm sure the water is perfectly safe with RFK, Jr.
 
I'm also worried about deregulation of things impacting health and the environment. DOW and similar have no problem poisoning us with forever chemicals now for sake of their own profit, think of how easy it might be going forward given proj25 and SCOTUS.

I want red-tape cleaned up, but not to enrich shareholders while poisoning our world or the world of our kids.

Education, Environment, affordable healthcare and economy are the most important things to me and the first three might be on the chopping block.
 
My son is special needs so I have some of the same concerns that Sooner mentioned on page 2. I also have two young daughters who are unlikely to have the same reproductive rights as adolescents and adults that previous generations enjoyed, at least at the federal level. We are financially secure and should be able to weather any financial headwinds that may arise if Trump executes his economic "plan." I worry most about the future that we are leaving our children.

Market did fine last time under Trump until Covid then it tanked and quickly recovered. Lack of regulation helps the market and I would think given his frequently misplaced priorities he will try to prop up the market. This is something I am not too concerned about. But anyone retiring in a year probably should have shifted mostly out of the market regardless of who is president.

Also a possibility, the Euros could also call Trumps bluff. They have seen that the Russian threat is not what many feared and decide to tell Trump to fuck off and that Europe will decide its own defense.

Think there’s a 50/50 chance that NATO ends as we know it. The fly in the ointment is that the euros are still recovering economically from COVID. Not sure they have the fiscal capacity for a great defense spending expansion.

The US exiting NATO would make the isolationist wing of MAGA very happy.

My wife works on mostly federally funded research studies at UNC. I'm mildly concerned about funding but I'm hoping her 19 years of experience will get her jobs on the ones that remain. I don't think either party is dumb enough to fuck with SS or Medicare and essentially piss off everybody. I'm not terribly concerned about what Trump will do policy wise because I think he mostly just wants the title of President and won't really do anything and then claim he did. I have some concern about what might happen with a unified government but it's hard to fuck me over without fucking over some of your own too.

I am somewhat concerned about him trying to remain in power, or create legislation that will erode democracy and keep his family in power. What I am mostly concerned about is the bravado, posturing, vindictiveness, ego and whatnot that could lead us into unnecessary and potentially disastrous conflicts. I truly hope he dies. I do not like Vance at all but I see him as mostly an opportunist who tried to piggyback himself into the most power he could get as soon as possible, and he succeeded. I do not see him as a threat to democracy and I don't think he's as right wing as he pretends to be right now.

My wife asked me if we would be better off if Trump just died. I said hell no. We don’t want Vance & Thiel at the helm.
