Let us have an understanding based and rooted in something. Some ppl are dumb. Some ppl are liars.

Are you asking me because you don't understand or is it bait for a dopamine dump? I can go either way. If you're looking for dpshtry, at least be funny. If you're looking for an actual conversation, I'll probably ask you follow up questions, for clarity, like you're 5.
I am semi curious as to what the fuck you’re talking about. I couldn’t care less if you ever win another game. But this bizarre idea that carolina should somehow be above firing a guy that was clearly underperforming and reticent to changing with the unfortunate but glaringly obvious landscape that’s become the reality of the sport is REAL weird. Gives Happy Valley vibes.

Your post read like you’re on the tail end of a shitty acid trip that ended in a thirsty walk down Franklin only to find out He’s Not closed 4 years ago.

UNC Basketball needs to be rebuilt. The Dean Smith era ended with Roy Williams's retirement. The Davis era is marked by decline. Once people realize this - you can see comments like Kenny's in a different light. It is true that UNC Basketball doesn't have the name mystique it used to have. We need a coach who can build a new dynasty and create a new mystique.
That's a lot to ask for. Probably too much to ask for.

There likely isn't a Dean Smith or Roy Williams out there.

The way "back" is by bigger and better spending.

Some of the people on this thread apparently don’t care if UNC hangs any more banners as long as they can look at the coaches on our bench and reminisce fondly about the banners our coaches hung 15, 25, or 35 years ago.
Frankly, a large part of it for me is that I'm 74. It's an absolute fact that while there is an argument that changing coaches will be better in the long run, it's also a fact that with the progress we made just this year, the best odds of us getting back to that level in my remaining lifetime was with Hubert. Yes, it did mean that we also lost some connections to the past that has meant a lot to me and others. That also mattered.

When you revel in the glories of the past and how Hubert let you down, sometimes think that he took over a struggling program at a time that damned near everything that gave UNC a recruiting advantage was negated by the NIL and transfer changes. He also ended up with a talented but misfit group that he had for an extra year because of Covid before he could start giving more of his own identity to the team. Tell me that the talent level has been the same over the last seven years.

Don't get me wrong, I had the same kinds of hopes. I just didn't have the same kinds of expectations. I was a little disappointed in his stubbornness about the GM although that apparently could have been a better fit. It was still a step in the right direction.

Oh well, we'll see if it was worth it.

Everyone wants UNC to win more titles but some would prefer it be done in a dignified way. Is that unreasonable?

I'm a little surprised that so many here don't understand that UNC basketball is a lot more than wins and losses to some people.

It could be that true that UNC has to be fully immersed in the new ecosystem to be ultra elite but that doesn't mean everyone has to be thrilled by it.

That is my sentiment, as well. The thrill is gone in following major college sports .That said, if I were young enough to have never had the experience I imagine I would feel perfectly fine with where major college sports is today.

There’s a balance. I could just as easily say by your posts that you don’t care what happens to Dean’s or Roy’s legacy and the pipeline of alums and family environment that has lasted most of our lifetimes, provided you get what you consider to be a “better” shot at more banners (flimsy as that shot might turn out to be). And I mostly believe that for some of you who speak with such cynicism and rancor about HD and his supporters, parsing every detail of his exit to hungrily expose flaws of a wounded Tar Heel even though they don’t really know shit about shit and the players sentiments are what matter most, and many players have expressed gratitude and sadness. That matters far more than some internet dorks with pitchforks clutching their pearls over what so and so said that so and so heard about when he left and who he may or may not have talked to at a time deemed satisfactory to them.

My take, from the very beginning of any rumbling about Hubert, has been that I will gladly tolerate more inconsistency in the W’s column and with XO’s in order to maintain the culture, while allowing HD to evolve into the very, very tricky new landscape that many of you underestimate just because a handful of coaches you point to (which rotates every couple years) has had some recent success.

So, yes, if it meant a few less W’s and deep tourney runs, I was satisfied to keep watching it play out. But then my ego is not so dependent on the banners hung up by a bunch of teenagers. I’ve been in it all these years for that, for sure… but mostly, and especially as I’ve gotten older and have seen what’s happened to sports at all levels, I value the tradition and legacy of something that was truly unique in ALL sports, not just college basketball.

So if that’s using Dean as a trump card, then call it what you want. But what it authentically means to me is thinking in terms of his principles, and Roy’s principles, and their *modesty and humility* and letting those be the beacon. Regardless of how you think those principles don’t “suit the era.” And not just impetuously chasing immediate gratification (which is not even close to guaranteed and could actually cause a quicker spiral than HD ever would’ve), just because my ego doesn’t haven’t the patience to bear any fewer wins than I think I’m entitled to.

That was the rumor back then, maybe not the Dean part but Jordan calling him was.
I remember hearing about Jordan calling Doherty telling him to take the job - I don't buy Dean telling Jordan to do it though - Dean didn't want us to hire Doherty - he even wanted us to consider Rick Majerus

Over what I fear is coming? I hope it doesn’t happen but it would make HD’s tenure look like a golden age.

None of you guys considered how things could unravel on levels far beyond tourney appearances or seeds or whatever metric makes your ego feel best. Only that there were “standards” not being met and now “mediocrity” is being thrown around by idiots, pointing at generally pretty damn good results that most coaches and fanbases would kill for, yet still beneath what THEY are entitled to!

You guys all thought it couldn’t get worse than what it was. Well now we’re going to find out.
That you won't answer the question shows that you would not be happy with five more years of the same results. So, you're arguing just to argue at this point.

One could argue that any slip in the brand started with Roy, but then, they'd also be arguing that the slip continued/accelerated under HD.

Roy's last five years: ACC finish 1, 3, 1, 13, 5; NCAA seed 1, 2, 1, no postseason, 8; NCAA round championship, 32, 16, no postseason, 64
Hubert's five years: ACC finish 2, 7, 1, 4, 4; NCAA seed 8, didn't make it, 1, 11, 6; NCAA round Runner up, didn't make it, 16, 64, 64

Well said. The depths to defend at best a mediocre coach is bizarre just because he is an alumn and "true" family. Should Manek be considered "family"? Or Ingram? We can have great people in the program and be considered family even if they didn't graduate from UNC, nor have any prior ties.
