He also moved Dean Smith's and coach Gut's offices to the basement. I had the honor of a 30 minute conversation with Dean Smith in that basement office and thought why would UNC allow the greatest college basketball coach of all time to be shuttled into the basement. Of course being the gracious and humble man he was he seemed to have no problem with his digs as the greatest college basketball coach of all time.He was so damn petty . I had a work mate that worked , volunteered actually I guess, as an usher with her husband.
They had the seats behind the team-top of the line job for Ushers
He moved them -I guess because the families, recruiter connections were friendly with them...............
Objection, hearsay.I worked with someone whose mother worked in the basketball administration. I remember approaching her early in the 1st season when Doh was having success, and I gave her a high 5 saying this is great. She shook her head and said Doh had alienated the entire administration staff. I ask her what she meant and she told me this story.
Just after Doh was hired and settling in, Phil Ford came by Doh's office to congratulate him and told him if there was anything he could do to help Doh just let him know.
Doh 's response to Ford was, "What you can do for me is to stay the fuck out of my way"
OK. I'm now remembering it vaguely. I think the problem was that Karl previously had an out for UNC, but after Gut was hired, Karl figured there would be no opening for a while. So he didn't ask for one when he signed in 98.Nope.
“…
Karl spent a long weekend attempting to convince the Bucks' owner, Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., to let him speak to the school beyond an informal chat with former coach Dean Smith, Karl's mentor. Kohl, who signed Karl to a four-year, $20 million deal in 1998, denied permission, Karl said.
"I'm not going to sit here and deny that I wish I had more freedom," Karl said. "Analyzing it, I probably would have done the same thing the Senator did, but that doesn't mean I'm happy with the decision."…
"I'm sure he's not totally happy with me," Karl said. "I'm not sure he understands the lure that place has for (alumni)."…”

That coaching search was one time I had some genuine inside info on anything of the sort and weirdly had two distinct lines of sight into the proceedings.
I fucking hope you weren't day drinking back then. If you talked to Coach Smith after starting day drinking at 7AM, you should be banned. He also moved Dean Smith's and coach Gut's offices to the basement. That's true I was not in Doh's office when Phi Ford dropped by to visit and offer his support...objection sustainedObjection, hearsay.
I was on a sports forum at the time that was not ACC-centric.Did everyone know that no one liked him or did that only become known once he was back in CH?
It seems that having spent 7 years as an assistant under Roy at KU folks would have been aware of this personality, but maybe it changed once he got the big seat at Carolina?
When did Doherty prove he could coach at a high level?I worked with someone whose mother worked in the basketball administration. I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that you need to pick this argument with the other 5 posters who’ve said as much, and believe it.The biggest myth on internet messageboards is that Uni's can't pay this and can't pay that. It's they don't want to pay it, but would never say that because the donations would slow down. Easier for a televangelist to cry and moan on TV and beg for your money than to say they have plenty.
FactI’m not saying you’re wrong, just that you need to pick his argument with the other 5 posters who’ve said as much, and believe it.
Are you seeing this on IC or 247?Another insider just posted that the Stevens stuff has smoke, but not guaranteed. Basically, we're doing our best to get him and there is interest.

If it's true that Stevens turned down 7 yr, $70 million from Indiana, I have a hard time imagining we can beat that - or that Stevens would take less than that to coach us instead of Indiana, unless there's some big unknown reason why he's looking to leave the Celtics and/or get back into college coaching.Another insider just posted that the Stevens stuff has smoke, but not guaranteed. Exactly. Blue Blood is a different beast than top 5 currently relevant team. The fact that we aren’t a top 5 currently relevant team is exactly why this blue blood is likely moving on from Hubert.I know the point he’s trying to make, and he’d be correct if he didn’t use the term “blue blood.”
Blue blood implies historical relevance, not current relevance. And by that standard, we belong near the top of that group, behind only Kentucky.
I believe he’s talking about current national relevance. In which case, he’s obviously correct.
