There were Doherty stories around town...two that I was told -- that he had threatened the guy at the dry cleaners -- had blown up down at the Catholic School and scared the hell out of the staff.

He also moved Dean Smith's and coach Gut's offices to the basement. I had the honor of a 30 minute conversation with Dean Smith in that basement office and thought why would UNC allow the greatest college basketball coach of all time to be shuttled into the basement. Of course being the gracious and humble man he was he seemed to have no problem with his digs as the greatest college basketball coach of all time.

That coaching search was one time I had some genuine inside info on anything of the sort and weirdly had two distinct lines of sight into the proceedings.

OK. I'm now remembering it vaguely. I think the problem was that Karl previously had an out for UNC, but after Gut was hired, Karl figured there would be no opening for a while. So he didn't ask for one when he signed in 98.

I fucking hope you weren't day drinking back then. If you talked to Coach Smith after starting day drinking at 7AM, you should be banned.
 
I had heard the st Thomas More story from several people and few others listed, but never heard the Phil Ford one... that is among the most unnecessary self defeating and absurd actions I can possibly think of in that situation.

I was on a sports forum at the time that was not ACC-centric.
There was a Notre Dame guy in there and he kept insisting the ND players were thrilled that Doherty was leaving.

When did Doherty prove he could coach at a high level?

He was 170-180 for his career.

UNC Athletics budget 10-15 in the hole the last couple years
First year the Univ actually bailed them out with "institutional funds"-14 million
Last year the Univ did not

I know the point he’s trying to make, and he’d be correct if he didn’t use the term “blue blood.”

Blue blood implies historical relevance, not current relevance. And by that standard, we belong near the top of that group, behind only Kentucky.

I believe he’s talking about current national relevance. In which case, he’s obviously correct.

If it's true that Stevens turned down 7 yr, $70 million from Indiana, I have a hard time imagining we can beat that - or that Stevens would take less than that to coach us instead of Indiana, unless there's some big unknown reason why he's looking to leave the Celtics and/or get back into college coaching.

Exactly. Blue Blood is a different beast than top 5 currently relevant team. The fact that we aren’t a top 5 currently relevant team is exactly why this blue blood is likely moving on from Hubert.
