Is MAGA MSG Rally the October Surprise?

Trumps team indicated to media this would be a press conference and cover the coverage of his MSG rally. So far, another bait and switch. And telling that the way Trump is doubling down about offensive remarks about Americans from Puerto Rico is to go on a rant bout illegal immigration.

Fair enough, that’s why I said I guess I can see it being a surprise. I’ve been to so many shows and listened to enough podcasts to know that, relatively, it was a tame (and unfunny) set.

Hinchcliffe is in Austin, and Austin in recent years has cultivated a comedy club scene leaning toward the right and headed by Rogan/Hinchcliffe and others. And consequently that scene is becoming notorious for walking that line between what some consider edgy comedy and what some consider hate speech/xenophobia/conspiracy etc. From what I’ve seen, that scene is not my thing.

But it’s always about context. What flies in an Austin club may bomb in SF, LA, NYC, Chicago, etc. And what flies in those places would still bomb at a major political event in front of a world audience. As we are seeing.

I think it's less that they "walk that line" between edgy comedy and hate speech/xenophobia and more that they simply appeal to a crowd that finds hate speech/xenophobia funny.

And their target audience appears to be young, white males, which ties back to some of the other discussions regarding the Gen Z male voter.

First, presidential rallies, in general , aren't what they used to be. We have comedians, rappers, professional wrestlers, etc, so having a comedian isn't surprising.

Second, he's a comedian. He does what comedians do. I suspect he was also confident that his audience would be receptive to his off-color jokes.

I don't blame Ricky Gervais for his performance at the hoity toity Golden Globes. I blame the Golden Globes for inviting a host who they knew was known for controversial comedy. Ricky was doing what Ricky does, just like this guy. Ultimately, he did nothing wrong to be held accountable for, IMO.

But Ricky Gervais is actually funny. He’s an extremely successful comedian who sometimes says controversial things. Like Chappell or Carlin. Hinchcliffe is an asshole bro of modest success telling jokes, mostly on a podcast. This I know only because I’ve never heard of him before this spectacle and that’s what Google has to say about him.

As a pretty regular viewer of Kill Tony, I do enjoy it for the comedians themselves, but have always thought Hinchliffe was an asshole and apparently a rare gay magat. Comments he’s made in previous pod cast episodes about Biden/Trump/Harris prepared me for what was said at MSG. His podcast is one of the most popular ones out there and I’m sure he will suffer some sponsor losses because of this. They usually post the podcasts on YouTube a few weeks after the fact so I’m going to be interested to see how he is in a few weeks.
