I've been thinking this morning about how all of this went down. You know it has had to be strange for Bubba to know that you're trying to talk to Mack about the future and succession plans and Mack keeps talking about how he's coming back. You'd think Mack would have realized how it was going to go for him, but maybe he thought he could pull together enough support to avoid being fired if the didn't agree to resign?

Also, I wonder how many HOF coaches were outright fired (not even pushed into retirement) from the last 2 jobs they held. I'm guessing it can't be that many.

I honestly see it as taking away dad’s keys when it is time.

Yeah, the only hall of fame coaches I can think of who were fired were fired due to scandal (Joe Paterno, Bobby Knight, Rick Pitino).

Bobby Bowden wasn't fired, but I do think he was privately, finally forced out the door at FSU - he held on way too long, imo. Ohio State legend Woody Hayes was fired, for hitting a Clemson player in a bowl game, and given his age he probably should have retired earlier. And Paterno should have retired a good deal earlier as well - his reputation might not have been wrecked if he had done so, although the abuse of young men in his program started in the 80s, I believe. And judging from what we've also seen in politics - such as California Senator Dianne Feinstein - clinging to your job with your fingernails and stubbornly refusing to gracefully retire, even when it's obvious to everyone but you that it's time to go, is actually pretty commonplace, unfortunately.

Woody Hayes might be one who was fired for losing too much; his last team was 7-4-1 and lost in the Gator Bowl, not the Rose Bowl. The previous year was 9-3, a loss in the Sugar and finishing out-of-the Top 10 for the first time since 1971.
Some might say he was fired for punching the Clemson player; but, Hayes had a long history of outrageous temper tantrums. The difference was he was winning big in those days.

I'm not as familiar with the universe of possible replacement as others are, but I can pretty much tell you that our only hope is to catch lighting in a bottle with an up and coming G5 coach/P5 assistant, or maybe a disgraced P5 coaching looking for some redemption (hello Brent Venables). To think we're going to get someone who's currently leading a competitive P5 team is just silly.

Make him the HC

He coached the running backs and tight ends with success. He has HC experience in the NFL...

I doubt we will get anyone better
I hate this world we're in, but you need a splashy name to get people to add NIL money.

Yeah he has experience alright. Experience being one of the worst HCs in NFL history. We can absolutely do better than Freddie Kitchens.
He had the same win loss record as Nick Saban in his last season. 6 and 10 doesn't get you in the conversation of worst NFL head coaches ever.

Yeah, I’m not so sure Paterno and Knight would have been fired if they were still in their prime when news of their scandals broke.

Lefty Driesell at Maryland after Len Bias dies on the ski slopes.
The difference with Lefty was that he was not yet inducted into the hall of fame when he was fired. Knight, Paterno, and Pitino were when they were fired.

Woody Hayes wasn’t either, but back then the rule was that a college football coach could not be inducted into the hall of fame until after retirement (or I guess at some point after being fired).

Another one: Our very own Larry Brown was essentially fired from SMU (he was forced to resign).

Glenn Schuman
Jesse Minter
Jon Sumrall

These are top 3 candidates I am told.

Take Minter off. It's a pipe dream and he'll likely have an NFL job soon. Add Dan Mullen (Mullen has reached out and UNC is entertaining but not to the extent right now for anything to materialize) and Arthur Smith. Smith has expressed interest. Smith is not super high on Cunningham's list. Cunningham wants a head coach. Schumann is the only coordinator he is considering. I feel like Sumrall is top choice. No inside info on that, just a gut feeling.

You write that as if you have “inside info” -
  • “Smith is not super high on Cunningham’s list.”
  • “Cunningham wants a head coach.”
  • “Schumann is the only coordinator he is considering.”
It’s all supposition.

No first hand info. But spoke with someone inside the Athletic department today, thats the scuttlebutt around campus. SO I guess it's second hand info. So who knows how much it's worth. But the same guy has given me info early before. We will see. Also said this could be done and announced as early as Sunday, whichI find hard to believe.
