Based on what? As has been extensively reported, he barely reads or cares to know anything, and has no patience to understand anything in detail. He sits there watching cable news all day. His cabinet picks from his first term were repeatedly huge mistakes and embarrassments that frustrated, not helped, whatever he was trying to do. He constantly fails to understand basic economic concepts and has to have them explained to him. He almost certainly does not realize that the word "asylum" has multiple, very different meanings.

He is absolutely a natural showman and performer. He is great at extemporizing on a mic (at least for people who care very little about the substance of what he's saying, which luckily for him is a large percentage of Americans). he is a fabulous self-promoter and has made a fortune in large part by screwing people; as anyone in business can tell you, having fewer scruples and morals than literally everyone else is a powerful tool in the business world. But is he some savvy political genius? Absolutely not and it is pointless to assume that every stupid thing he does is somehow a hidden strategic chess move.
I agree with you, but the poster did say smarter than we give him credit for, which is a very low bar. 😁

He can stand up, so we know there is a little brain function there.

I am reading some stuff that there is still a chance that Gaetz could wind up back in his Congressional seat. But that would presumably reopen the Ethics investigation so maybe that means there is no way that happens.

Would you prefer the Texas or Missouri AG? Bondi is a relatively normal selection in the Trump Overton window.
Yeah, could be a whole lot worse. She’s not exactly a rock star but at least she has a good head on her shoulders.

If she’s loyal to Trump……more loyal to Trump than the US Constitution AND she has a good head on her shoulders, she worries the shit out of me.

She’s worked for the Trumplican America First Policy Institute. She was part of his first impeachment team defense team.

She’s loyal to Trump.

I can say that Pam Bondi flirted with me when I was younger and prettier. My company was installing the phone system for the state attorney's office and my job was to go around and check that all the employees knew how to use them. I went into her office and while I was in her office asking if I could help her with anything, she rubbed my arm a few times. And then I'm completely oblivious and move on to the next office and kick myself forever more everytime I see her name in the news.

Of course she is. There’s no chance Trump will ever nominate someone who isn’t loyal to him personally. I’m not saying she’s great. But on the scale of people Trump would realistically choose, Gaetz was pretty close to the far end, and Bondi is not nearly that far down the line.

I think this was entirely Gaetz' idea. He floated the idea to Trump in a 2 hour plane ride. Gaetz would take the heat for a week/10 days and then withdraw, it would given him an excuse to resign ahead of the ethics report being released and in exchange Trump would promise to back Gaetz for Governor of FL in 2026. Gaetz now has 2 years to raise money and campaign with Trump's support. It would have been problematic, even in FL, if the ethics report was released.

Whether or not Trump follows through with the promised support will be an open question, but odds are Gaetz was going to resign before the ethics report. Daddy Gaetz was also returned to the Florida Senate this cycle after 8 years out of office.

But on the bright side there would be no reason for you guys to try to get DC and PR as states. ;)
True. Hopefully they will be states at some point, as there's really no reason why they shouldn't be. Especially PR. It's a bummer that Republicans oppose PR statehood purely for political reasons; maybe if Latino males keep shifting towards Republicans, that will change.
