I respectfully disagree . I think Coach Smith saw the writing on the wall when Stack and Sheed left for the NBA as Sophs. He knew what what the future held in store and was ready to leave the stage and set Coach Gut up for a nice state retirement pension.I don't think so. Dean played it as it laid, but the game has changed now. He might not have liked it, but I think he'd be on board with playing by whatever rules were in place. Kinda like how the Four Corners helped inaugurate the shot clock and he did pretty good with that...
All true. Doesn't mean I'm happy about it.That's all well and good, but college athletics is changing with or without the participation of UNC. The Supreme Court ruling against the NCAA made it clear that the old way of doing things was gone. The train has left the station, so it's either get on board or get left behind. Pay to play is a fact of life.
I don't know how many football programs will eventually be in the top tier of competition, but it will be something less than the 134 schools that currently comprise the FBS. With this move, UNC has shown they intend to participate at that top level no matter how that situation plays out among the conferences.
The first three years are guaranteed, according to what I’ve read. His deal is 50 million for 5 years
I bet Dean would've been OK with that deal! For himself, I mean...His deal is 50 million for 5 years
They are probably having traffic overload and related glitches. But to their credit they’ve done a whale of a job covering this. Not sure if IC is swamped or what, but I'm not seeing the message boards tab at all on the main page, nor any of the others. It's just stories...
I gotta agree with this, and was thinking that the other day after reading about the SEC and NIL. I just don't see the Dean Smith I remember ever coaching in today's college sports environment. If college sports had been like this in the early 60s I really do believe he would have chosen another profession - maybe become a college professor or college administrator rather than deal with a system like the one college sports has created for itself over the last several years. I just don't see him ever enjoying coaching teams filled with one-and-doners and constant revolving doors due to far more lax transfer rules and basically players just going to the highest bidder.I respectfully disagree . There is no way Coach Smith would be playing by the rules in place today...
Or he would have just coached at a D2 or D3 schoolI gotta agree with this, and was thinking that the other day after reading about the SEC and NIL. True, didn't think about that. I do think a college professor or administrator would still have been a possibility, but I could see him coaching at a lower level.Or he would have just coached at a D2 or D3 school
We’re either gonna be playing in Charlotte in DecemberIt's very simple.
This is the ultimate boom or bust hire.
UNC will be playing in December in Charlotte in the next two years, or this will set the program back decades. There is no middle on this.
I think he's too old to start to build a program. I hope I'm dead-ass wrong.
Mayonnaise bowl champs 2025!We’re either gonna be playing in Charlotte in December

I don’t see Bill’s legs. It doesn’t look like he’s riding Ramses but rather something less family friendly. With that said, it might end up being a prescient image.
Maybe West Virginia job would've been more appropriateI don’t see Bill’s legs. It doesn’t look like he’s riding Ramses but rather something less family friendly. With that said, it might end up being a prescient image.
