The 15 million less voters has been tough for me to wrap my head around. I thought she ran an energetic campaign and the party embraced her.

Further, I saw hundreds of posts from Republicans who were voting against Trump because they see what type of person he is, not to mention women pissed about Roe. I was naively expecting a blowout and didn't even consider this result a possibility.

My kids go to a Christian school, so we are one of the few families not voting for Trump. I told them that I truly hope he's a good president and my fears are unwarranted. There's nothing in his history that would indicate that I am, though. 😪
Its not 15 million less voters. You are comparing apples and oranges. At this point in 2020, there were still another 10 million votes to roll in. California alone will add another 5-6 million votes.

I'm not sure this language means exactly what you think it does. I think it's code for "we need to make everything like the good old days." You know, everything.

As people have pointed out, we have more manufacturing jobs than in a long time. Wages are up. Wages are up more than inflation. Unemployment is extremely low. This "we're struggling economically" bullshit is just that, bullshit. They aren't struggling enough to forgo the $1000 per month they pay on gas in their needless large and inefficient trucks.
Super, you are continuing to demonstrate an inability to understand/see things through their lens. This disconnect is a major reason why she lost. Chalking it up to "she's a woman and that is why she lost," is lazy-think.

Kamala got the nomination ultimately because she's a black woman, not because she was the best candidate the dems had to offer. There were a lot of unenthused dems, plus a lot of latent misogyny.

I did an informal exit poll with my classes (18-22 yos) and it seemed even there that hispanics and Indians (dot not feather) abandoned her in droves. From what I could tell black men weren't exactly thrilled with her either.
Harris got it because she was Biden’s VP. Do you feel Dems should’ve run a second nationwide primary in 4-6 weeks or have delegates decide at a contested convention?

As far as I know, none of the other high profile Dems mentioned (or leaked) that they wanted the spot.

Remember the situation- The new candidate will have a 3 month campaign, having raised no money and assembled no campaign infrastructure. Their opponent is up significantly in the polls and just survived an assassination attempt on live television. If you had Presidential aspirations, would you want to use your turn working from that starting point?

You are undoubtedly correct concerning the situation many people face today and their opinion of the economy. The electorate certainly has changed, I guess, in the past 40 years. Being a young adult in Reagan’s first term, inflation was as bad as in Biden’s administration, interest rates were double the rates in the past four years, and buying a house was out-of-reach for most. Reagan still was reelected in ‘84.

Reagan must have been a much better blame shifter than Biden/Harris.
The Michael Deaver campaign TV arrangements in ‘81-‘84 were BRILLIANT!

Deaver and Reagan’s advance teams were GREAT at giving the networks incredible video and still photo backdrops. Audio was high quality.

Deaver and team gave the media what they wanted - easy to use video/pictures of picturesque scenes.

Reagan was the kindly, friendly, avuncular grandfather who did “manly” work on his California “ranch.”

Paul Volcker (Carter appointee) had had to send rates so high to break inflation that 7.1% unemployment, 4.3% inflation, and 9% fed discount rate were considered GREAT in 1984…..Morning in America!

Reagan was credited with breaking inflation (he’d wanted to fire Volcker during the 1982 recession) and growing the economy (7+% unemployment).

A similarity between 1984 and 2024 - the media feared Reagan’s staff and they fear Trump.

Trump got there by speaking on economic issues that matter to many in the working class in a way that appeals to them.

He talks about the importance of American manufacturing and that we need to bring it back. He talks about tariffs which many in manufacturing know can be used to protect manufacturing and he points out how offshoring has hurt manufacturing in the US. He talks about how inflation has hurt them over the last few years. He talks about lowering taxes that will put more money in the pockets of working class folks.

Now, you and I know that Trump did nothing really productive about economic issues for the working class when he was in office the first time and almost certainly won't do much to help this time. But Trump does connect with the working class about economic issues whether or not he is able to follow through with any actual assistance.
I’m really impressed with how that huge Foxconn manufacturing facility in rural Wisconsin is doing.

Trump really brought home the jobs there!

Haven't read the whole thread yet, so somebody might've already said this:

So does this mean we actually are going back? Fuck...

Simple. Be the out party when the economy is bad. That worked in 1992, 2008 and 2020. No need to overly complicate the analysis.
And, ‘76 and ‘80……unfortunately, not applicable in 1984 (Somehow in ‘84 7.1% unemployment, 4.3% inflation, 9% fed discount rate were GREAT! MORNING IN AMERICA numbers and in 2024, 4.1% unemployment, 2.1% inflation, and 5% fed discount rate were “WORST ECONOMY EVER!”).

3 million fewer votes chose orangeturd compared to 2020
15 fucking million fewer votes chose Kamala as compared to Biden
Thats what I just heard So like 15 million Dems stayed home more or less
Oh you beat me to it

Re: manufacturing, there are more US manufacturing jobs currently than there were at any point during the Trump administration. Ironically, Trump’s second term will benefit from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act signed into law by Joe Biden.
We're 40+ years into manufacturing losses, a small rebound from a previous low doesn't mean much in the grand scheme.

In many ways, Trump's connection to the working class is less about actual policies or actions and more that he recognizes them in the way they see themselves, as "the backbone of the American economy". He gives them what they consider their "proper due" and they respond well to it.

Biden's first term is actually pretty similar to Reagan's.

The key difference is that Reagan inherited 13.5% inflation from Carter, whereas Biden inherited 1.23% inflation from Trump. So the voters blamed Biden for inflation and praised Reagan. That distinction makes sense and is consistent with the political rule I cited above.

She held percentages in cities and most
Turnout tanked across the board

Trump's votes went down

Hers went down by 15 million!!!!

Trump’s total will be higher than 2020. California alone should more than makeup the current difference. With 54% of votes counted, he has 3.9 million votes there

Anyone in manufacturing knows that tariffs will be an epic disaster. We will get supply chain blockages all over again, entirely self-inflicted. People know this.
I know that and you know that...but do you think the average American, much less the average working class American, really understands tariffs in any meaningful way?

I do not. Tariffs are a symbol to the working class that he's going to fight against China who took their jobs. My hunch is that he'll end up enacting a few, fairly-minimal tariffs directed at China to fulfill his promise and so that he can't be said to have lied and he'll let it go. There are certainly those in Trump's orbit and those in Congress who know what significant tariffs would do to the economy and so I'm guessing they'll largely direct him away from anything beyond some symbolic ones.
