“Free range” just means “outdoor access” or “access to the outdoors”. That can mean the chicken can stick its head through a hole into the great outdoors. Or, it has 2 square feet of a concrete slab. You should look up the requirements to be cage free.
My cousin is a Chicken scientist for one of the major chicken producers. It's interesting the stuff he tells me. According to him, most of these things are simply marketing.
“Cage-free” just means they aren’t in cages. It doesn’t mean the chickens are roaming in a pasture. There might be thousands in a barn with no access to outside.
“Pasture-raised” - good luck with that meaning the chickens are running around a pasture.
I get my eggs from a woman in Eli Whitney. She raises hogs and chickens. Her animals have huge areas to roam and graze. The eggs and pork are great! And, expensive compared to a lot of grocery store items. The eggs are only $7/dozen.
