It's a remake. Ariel was a very white/red haired female in the original.

Again, nobody....nobody....is going to care if there is a NEW movie featuring a non-white actor/actress. Literally nobody.
no, the original little mermaid is a fairytale book by hans christian andersen. a book. she didn't originally look like anything.

the original movie was made during a time when ALL of the disney princesses were white, which is racist as fuck.

Zen - if there is a character in a film where the race of the character makes ZERO difference to the plot, can you explain in words (not eye-roll emojis) why it matters if the race or hair color or height or even sex matter if it is different for the remake?
In all seriousness, I can’t comprehend why it should matter to anyone.

Yes and it was probably received the same way as Little Mermaid, Snow White and other DEI/Woke actions by Disney or other companies.
so your comment "Again, nobody....nobody....is going to care if there is a NEW movie featuring a non-white actor/actress. Literally nobody" is being retracted?

Why are you insisting Snow White actress was hired for DEI reasons? By your own link and another I posted, she is apparently the best thing about the movie by far.
Is it impossible to you that she was hired because she was the best for the job? By all accounts she is supremely talented.

For this poster, DEI is synonymous with minorities getting opportunities that should go to white people as they always have.

Sorry. For all right-wing whiners, this is what DEI means.

Are you mad because Charlton Heston played an Egyptian-born Moses?
A better question - is he going to be mad if Moses is ever again portrayed as being non-white, because by God, once an actor plays a role, that role must always be played in future productions by someone who looks exactly like that original actor (does it sound silly when said this way, because it sounds silly to me).

I'm combining Woke and DEI into one cover-all idea of unnecessarily considering race when it shouldn't matter.

I haven't seen the new snow white or little mermaid. My kids are in college/high school and have no interest in such things, so I don't plan to watch unless they're on Disney+ or TV.

When the race of the character doesn’t matter to the story, I don’t understand why

you can Google (if you truly cared) and find dozens of examples of characters changing races and looks from original movies to remakes. You aren’t aware of it for a reason, and it is because nobody cared about things that don’t matter until the advent of MAGA.
There have been some race changes. I didn't see any that stood out as remakes of current movies. Some were remakes of TV cartoons or adaptations of books.

Like I mentioned earlier, this might be exacerbated by Disney's charge into Wokeness/DEI.

This might be exacerbated by MAGAs suddenly and irrationally caring about things that don’t matter, driven to hysteria by right-wing media.

YOU ARE THE ONE INSISTING THAT THESE ACTORS SHOULD BE WHITE!
If you are going to remake an animated movie into a live action movie, yes. And it's not that it "matters" in the overall scheme of things. It's a movie. It changes nothing for anyone and it will change nothing in my life.
