So Trump has no understanding of how Canadian politics works. I mean, par for the course. I would be surprised if he did. But still it's sad that his advisors let him put his ignorance on full display so often.

“President Donald Trump continued to send mixed signals about his tariffs plans Wednesday — granting U.S. automakers a one-month reprieve on new 25% duties imposed on Canada and Mexico, while continuing to deem Canada's efforts to tackle drug and migrant flows insufficient. …”

What the fuck does he think a one month reprieve will do? And LOL at Lutnick. "No more pauses" he said. "We're not doing that."

It's not hard to connect the dots between the $1M-a-plate (up to $5M) dinners at Mar-a-Lago and the decision to create various carveouts in the tariff scheme. Just like people predicted.

He needs back up lights installed in his ass. He backtracks faster than Mr. Bojangles.

Trump said in a statement read by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt that the administration is giving a one-month exemption for automakers associated with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA), which Trump signed during his first term.

The exemption would apply to Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, as well as other companies with production facilities in the three North American countries.

This Ronald Reagan quote was so spot on that I was suspicious and checked Snopes before sharing:

“…In war, for one side to win, the other must lose. But commerce is not warfare. Trade is an economic alliance that benefits both countries. There are no losers, only winners. And trade helps strengthen the free world.

Yet today protectionism is being used by some American politicians as a cheap form of nationalism, a fig leaf for those unwilling to maintain America's military strength and who lack the resolve to stand up to real enemies — countries that would use violence against us or our allies. Our peaceful trading partners are not our enemies; they are our allies. We should beware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends — weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world — all while cynically waving the American flag. The expansion of the international economy is not a foreign invasion; it is an American triumph, one we worked hard to achieve, and something central to our vision of a peaceful and prosperous world of freedom.…”

I thought this might be AI but apparently not:

It that Bobby Knight?

“Farmers and meat producers across the U.S. can expect the new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China and the retaliatory action from those countries to hurt their bottom lines by billions of dollars if they stay in place a while, and consumers could quickly see higher prices for produce and ground beef.

But some of the impact on farmers might not be felt until the next harvest and some products might actually get cheaper in the short run for consumers if exports suffer. And the price of corn, wheat and soybeans accounts for relatively little of the price of most products. Plus, President Donald Trump could offer farmers significant aid payments, as he did during the trade war with China during his first administration, to offset some of the losses.

In his address to Congress Tuesday night, Trump argued that agricultural imports hurt American farmers and asked them to “bear with me again” as he seeks to protect them. He didn’t mention any additional aid.

“I love the farmer,” he said.

If the tariffs make farmers uneasy about investing in expensive tractors and consumers worry so much about groceries that they cut other spending, that would hurt the economy overall and could even lead to a recession. …”

Hinting at a farmer bail-out from impacts of Tariffs, but can they count on it? [My guess is probably yes but glad I am not having to make those decisions based on the available info at this moment.]

Gonna be a problem with potash being tariffed.

IIRC the first term subsidy to farmers came out of another fund and wasn't approved by Congress. Trump seems to be laser focused on cutting. Not sure he's interested in a bailout.
