I'm sure Mexico and Canada have no interest in a trade war as they are reasonable countries, but I'm half hoping that they absolutely hammer us with counter tariffs. Like really go off the deep end...They know Trump will always double down though, so there likely is no bottom and no way to "win" the trade war. Both countries will eventually make some public show that they will "do better" and create a more level playing field....Can I tell all of my builder and tradesman friends "I told you so" yet?

Trudeau and Sheinbaum should tell him that they will maintain tariffs until Trump publicly apologizes. To their countries, and to Ukraine.
The thing is, most of the leaders of the nations that have been our historical allies are not nearly the dicks that Trump is.

Ironically, the best thing to say about Trump's cabinet is that it's full of billionaires. That's not something I ever thought I'd say, but relatedly I didn't ever think the US president seemed hell bent on completely trashing the country and its economies. The billionaires at least have a vested interest in not letting that happen.

Also, there aren't too many candidates for the "best thing about Trump's cabinet."

Trudeau needs to be tough here. He won't keep his tariffs but he needs to make it clear that Trump is the one backing down.

If he plays the game where he pretends to have given Trump some concessions (like last time) then he will just invite more and more bad behavior from Trump. You can't give bullies victories even fake ones.

Stand up and tell the world that Trump backed down like the wimp that he is.

If you want to bring back manuf jobs to US, there are far better ways than massive tariffs which wreck the economy. Just exoand what Biden was doing with CHIPS Act and take some of the 4.5 trillion for the proposed tax extension and use if for this purpose (expanded CHIPS act, tax incentives and if needed tax penalites for offshoring.

Trump keeps offering different movitive for the tariffs. A cynic would say that he wants to get rid of the federal income tax and use tariffs to fund the limited US govt (like back in the 1890 days of the Robber Barons)

I don’t think that’s a cynical take. It’s quite obvious that that’s the plan. He’s stated as much.

Markets hold their breath hoping for reprieve on North American Trade War

“… Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said a decision was expected this afternoon on the newly instated 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and hinted at a possible compromise involving exemptions for some products.

"My thinking is it's going to be somewhere in the middle. So not 100% of all products and not none," he said on Bloomberg TV early Wednesday.

President Trump hasn't, so far, indicated he plans to roll back either the taxes on Canadian and Mexican imports, or the extra 10% tax on Chinese goods. These all went into effect Tuesday, shaking up financial markets. U.S. stocks were little changed early Wednesday.

Trump made a brief reference to the prospect of higher consumer prices because of his tariffs in a Congressional speech late Tuesday.

There will be little disturbance,” he said. “We’re okay with that.” …”
