Despite my initial assessment from the Kansas game, it's clear now that this isn't a good team. Had we gotten that big from Zona that went to Indiana, perhaps. But we didn't.

I like Hubert, but it has become clear to me that he is not the answer. I tend to trust in Roy, but even Roy can get things wrong, as he sometimes did.

Hubert bought himself a lot of time with that incredible title game run his first year. The fact he had a 1 seed last year also didn't hurt.

But he's not the answer. The whiff on a true big through the portal this year sealed it. We'll probably give him another year, but I doubt it amounts to anything. His success was from Roy's players.

That being said, I think we ought to make a serious play for Jay Wright. Time to get out of the family. Get his ass out of the booth. I imagine it was NIL that made him quit. But throw $8-10 million in there and give him a NIL person. I think he would be a cultural fit.

One of the things that tore my rear up was seeing that we gave Billichick $30 million for the football program. I get it. It's a new era. And we're obviously making a play for realignment. But we had that kind of money all along? What the hell!

We're an historic basketball program. How anyone with actual money can just let that go to rot is beyond me! I refuse to believe it.

Get Jay Wright in here and win some titles again.
I think this could be a good team, not elite, but definitely top-25 team. HD/staff simply refuse, or can't, adjust their approach to match, let alone uplift, the talents' skill-set. There are some simple fixes and adjustments they could try, but don't.

Highly unlikely that Jay Wright comes back to CBB.
You think Jay Wright wouldn't come back to coach UNC if given enough money and not having to worry about NIL?

Granted, my own ignorance, I thought he was a bit younger. Maybe late 50s. I see he's 63. But I think he could give it another go, for at least 5 years, with the right opportunity and money.

Carolina's defense MUST improve if they have post-season aspirations. Pretty bad against Cuse. Here are some up to date player
advanced metrics:

I don’t think he would but you never know.

I don’t think he has any interest in coaching in the current environment, which is why he retired. I would also prefer to hire a coach that would be viewed as more of a long term solution if successful.

High level coaches that would be candidates for the UNC job if/when it opens up again understand that the expectations are high and that there isn’t as much leeway for down seasons like coaches might get at some of the middle/lower tier programs. I seriously doubt that’s going to be a deal breaker that makes them turn down the job if they were actually interested in it in the first place.

I do worry about the fact that there is no sure-fire coaching candidate this time. When Doherty imploded it was clear that Roy Williams was waiting in the wings. This time there is no one. No one from the UNC coaching tree has been such a success that they would be guaranteed to be better than Davis, including Wes Miller. Many of the big-name coaches out there right now, like Bruce Pearl or Nate Oats or Scott Drew, either have a history of being sleazeballs or at least shady activities in their past. Maybe an NBA coach might be enticed to come, but there's no guarantee that they will be a success. I'm not saying that we shouldn't replace Davis if things don't turn around, but there is definitely more uncertainty this time than there was when Doherty was let go.

It may give some pause about wanting the job though.

High level candidates have options.

I wonder if the athletic department will even have enough money to hire a big name coach given how much they doled out to hire Belichick.

No offense, but this is a very, very, very silly concern.

We're fucking North Carolina, a top 3 (at worst) program in college basketball.

As long as we have our shit together (meaning we come with a competitive offer for pay for the HC & staff and we can show we have a good commitment to revenue sharing and NIL), we'll have good options that would be willing to come here.

While I don't think we're in a position where we can attract any coach we want, it is absolutely silly to believe that we couldn't attract a reasonably proven, highly competent coach to Chapel Hill.

And it's even sillier to suggest that such a concern should give any significant pause in moving on from a coach who has shown that he isn't up to even the most minimal standards that accompany Carolina Basketball.

UNC hired Matt Doherty once.

It’s also a different world now. Big money can be made everywhere. Coaches with options may want a more stable, controllable environment.

I'd make a move for Dusty May if i were making a move. Michigan has DEEEEEEP pockets but they just will never be UNC in basketball and May knows that.

He's a proven winner. He's 49 years old. He's turned that program around in a year after taking Florida Atlantic to the Final 4.

Michigan is a better job as long as UNC is in the ACC.

I would think Dusty would be interested in going home to Bloomington if he were going to leave Michigan, right?
