Thoughts on 25-26

Gone: RJ, Powell, Jackson, Withers, Claude

Portal Possibility: Trimble, (Cadeau?)

Returning: Washington, Lubin, Tyson, Cadeau, Brown

Recruiting: Isiah Denis, 6-5 wing
Derek Dixon, 6-3 SG

AND THE PORTAL THUS LOOMS GIGANTIC
Not looking great for next year, or this one.

How about compared to KU and Duke’s recent history? What allows/helps them stay at the top, consistently?
KU still has the same coach so not surprising. They've been dropping bags for years so no big deal for them to navigate this new landscape.
I'm surprised by dook though. Recruiting for them has not dropped at all, it may have actually gotten better.

Does anyone have thoughts on EC? He is getting SLAMMED on IC, which, of course, is likely an overreaction. I haven't been able to really watch the last two games, but a couple of people say he appears to not be well (coughing fits on the sideline?) But others are dragging him. From what I can gather, it seems likes he's trying too hard and going too fast. I also think he lets his emotions get the best of him.
I don't know what is being said on IC. I gave up on that place when this board started and even when I posted there, I avoided the sports boards as toxic waste dumps.

Elliot makes the same mistakes he made last year. I could understand a freshman dribbling into double teams in the open floor and turning the ball over because his high school experience told him he was faster and more skilled than his competitors so he could succeed making careless moves. That he continues to do it this year is surprising and disappointing. He does the same thing driving to the basket against college bigs and gets the ball back in the face. He hasn't learned when to take it all the way and when not to. He hasn't always adjusted to the increased talent of his competitors vs his schoolboy days when he was always the best player on the floor.

I think a lot of this is about coaching and player development, which is why many of us are disappointed in the staff.

No idea about health or off the court stuff, but to me he is stagnant due to the horrible offense this team is running

Don’t get me wrong - he can be a lot more careful with the ball and cutback on turnovers

But often times he’s forcing things because he has to. If he doesn’t create something, it’s going to be RJ throwing up a tough contested shot

Of course the lack of shooting still bothers him and is a major issue

What has dook done?

I’ll give you KU.
They have consistently had better seasons than UNC, lately.

So, what allows/helps those schools have better seasons than UNC? Why doesn’t UNC have those things to their level, or take advantage of them to their level?

EC's play is more mysterious to me than what you describe @farce©. He played well enough for the first five games or so. KU was 7 assists and 2 turnovers (his shooting was poor but he's never shot well). Far too many turnovers of late though. Mental lapses. All his mistakes seem to be of the mind.

Did he break up with his GF? Did someone close to him pass away?

Don't laugh. Things like that can make a difference.

The scouting report on this UNC team is out

They make no adjustments and are extremely predictable

Really think it’s as simple as that

Just look at Duke’s offensive schemes. They highlight and support their “star” players to succeed and perform well. At UNC you can see how HD runs his offense - lot of high-ball screens and guards driving to the basket or taking difficult jumpers, with virtually no passing off to the big or inside game. If makes it difficult for everyone.

It’s a no-brainer that a kid coming out of high school, or the portal, would want to go play in such a system at Duke instead of UNC, it’s easier to look good/great there in that system.

The scouting report is out on everybody.

Most every team is predictable.

UNC is small and hasn’t shot well enough to compensate for it.

I don’t know if there any magic adjustments to fix that.

Shoot better, protect the ball better, make a big shot or two.

This team isn’t that far away from being pretty good.

eff dook. They haven’t done shit with all that talent.

We do make adjustments, we just wait until we're down double digits to make any of them.

And, of course, some of our adjustments work and others don't, but there's doesn't seem to be a great understanding of when to make what adjustments for the best outcomes.

You have to be a casual fan or not know anything about basketball to think things are ok and have been ok more than not for UNC basketball the past 5 years.

Every team spams high pnrs while half the team stands around and watches?

If you have the players to make that work it’s one thing. This team clearly doesn’t

A way to fix that is to occasionally get your players easy looks by running offense that plays to their strengths

This team gets nothing easy there against high level competition

Well, unless you count players like Withers, J Wash, or Elliot getting left wide open from 3 because they can’t make them

Shoot better, protect the ball better, make a big shot or two.

This team isn’t that far away from being pretty good.

Can’t defend, not good at rebounding, don’t get many assists, not great at shooting. I’d say they are pretty far

If you can't make 3s and you don't have a big man that can score inside, the other teams are just going to pack the lane and take away any drives. This team needs to get turnovers and run for easy transition baskets and make 3s to win games without a big man to score and get rebounds. They aren't good enough defensively to get enough turnovers to make a difference, and they aren't making 3s, so they are losing against other good teams.

I'm probably too old to be following this stuff, but I did wonder if this contributed to RJ's slow start. It appears he and Deja broke up in the summer or early fall (I noticed he had stopped commenting on her IG posts, and she had a million of them in September.) But he also was hurt at the beginning on the season, too. I'm glad he's starting to work his way back to normal, although this offense ain't helping things.

They've had better seasons than UNC, lately. Are you saying they haven't?
Also, please address KU, if you don't want to talk about why Duke has had better seasons lately.
I would say that. How are you defining better seasons? Did dook have a better season than we did in 2022? Do you think they'd agree?

And how are you defining lately? We've played on the last Monday night 3 times out of the last 8 tourneys. dook? :: checks notes:: 0 out of the last 8
