Let's say Coach Davis does leave - who are some possible replacement candidates - Wes Miller? Jay Wright?
Not that I think it could mirror a Lee Fowler search, but I doubt the UNC brand has the pull it once did. The ACC stinks and is poor compared to the SEC/B1G. Paying players has evened the field a lot, too. Coaches can win big at a lot more places than they could 10-20 years ago.

If we move from Hubert after this season:

1) Nate Oates - $18mil buyout. Drops to $10mil in 3/2026. That buyout is untenable, most likely, unless this era limps along another couple of years.
2) Billy Donovan - needs to get fired in Chicago, first.
3) Scott Drew - how many dollars for the lord to tell him he belongs in Chapel Hill?
4) Jay Wright - offer him a setup similar to BB - GM, recruiters, etc. None of the ancillary BS. Just coach.
5) TJ Otzelberger - we could do a lot worse.
6) Fred Hoiberg - underrated, I think. Midwest guy, but his alma mater's otherwise occupied for the foreseeable future - see #5 above. Won at ISU and has turned Nebraska around. NBA pedigree. Long family lineage in coaching. I like him a lot, actually.
7) Shaka - great at VCU and Marquette. Struggled at Texas. Only one Sweet 16 since that 2011 Final Four run...
8) Wes - won big at UNCG. Turning Cincy around as we speak. Would be great if he could have a breakthrough season up there. Could make this much, much clearer.
9) Up-and-coming NBA asst coaches ??

Am I leaving anybody out?

- Ben McCollum? Guy's won 81% of his games over 16 seasons.
- Luke Murray - UConn asst and Bill Murray's kid. Young. Job description is Hurley's "offensive coordinator". They've looked stellar on that side of the ball for years.

And I think you'd have to give due diligence to Chris Beard and Todd Golden (yes, I know...). And Will Wade, if things really go sideways - but, the guy got in trouble for doing what's now legal.

I really, really wish Hubert would work out, but I just don't see it...

In today's world of NIL and portal free agency, the next coach (and GM) will have to be able to navigate the professional game that college basketball has become. UNC has not navigated that path too well yet. Davis may have been fine under the previous amateur system but he appears to be one-for-the-portal (Manek). Ingram & Ryan were serviceable but not the impact player(s) we see in many other top-tier programs of the new professional era of college basketball.

I really wanted UNC to go after Oats when Roy retired. I think Wright could be persuaded to come out of retirement if he has the same deal as Belichick. I also like Hoiberg. And Wes Miller looks like he is doing pretty good at Cincy this year.

That's what was reported at the time, and Jay has basically said as much since he retired
I know that was a story that was being floated around by posters on IC, but given the information from Roy, HD, and Bubba that's come out since the hire, I don't think it was accurate. Who reported it? I have not seen Jay Wright say that he was offered the job or even in talks with UNC. (Same with Mark Few - also a story that was floated around IC).

Lucky for you, we can't afford him.
Ha. Probably correct with Bama footing the bill. That said, I know someone who is close friends with Oates and I'll just say that this person isn't the most ethical I've been around. Add in that to what's publicly known about the guy and I'm out on him.

Thanks for finding this. I still don't think her sources were accurate here, as we know there never was a candidate pool. There never was a search. HD was offered the job by Bubba the day after Roy let Bubba know.

You don't think any Villanova folks asked Jay about the possibility?

There didn't have to be official talks with UNC for him to express he wouldn't want it. In any case, not hard to believe given his decision to retire from the sport 1 year later

I'd love for Jay to consider UNC, in a coaching only role like another poster described above

It's somewhat ironic that it's likely easier to make the CFB playoffs in football because the ACC is so poor, and at the same time it's much more difficult to make the NCAAT in the ACC because the ACC is so poor. A mediocre football team could go 11-2 while in the ACC without being very good and make the playoffs, while a decent basketball team could go 13-7 in the ACC and be left out cold.

Wait, Ingram was definitely a high level impact player. One could make a viable argument he was better than Manek. He averaged 12.2 and 8.8 while shooting 39% from 3. Also 3rd team All-ACC.

Wow, there are some real dicks posting on the IC basketball boards.

Some guy and his old wife figured out that all of UNC's problems are because the players have tattoos and piercings. I'm surprised he didn't call them thugs.

Yeah, honestly a lot of us are losing sight of the big picture. You have to balance the overall body of results with overall program trajectory.

Hubert has several very impressive accomplishments under his belt (2022 title game run, 2 of our biggest wins ever against Dook, 2024 regular season title and COY). Those obviously count for something. He also has a missed tournament in 2023 and is looking at another missed tournament in 2025 barring a massive midseason turnaround or miracle ACCT run. He’s had long stretches in 2022, 2023, and now 2025 seasons where his teams have looked poorly coached.

For me, the deciding factor here is future recruiting and roster building trends. If we had the stability of a strong nucleus of young players currently on the team + another crop of highly touted freshmen coming in from the HS ranks, I’d be fine with giving Hubert at least another season to get back on track. In reality, the current players who will realistically return to college (still have eligibility and aren’t surefire pro prospects) don’t collectively inspire much confidence, and we don’t have any true big time prospects in the upcoming class. That’s not even factoring in the potential of losing guys to the portal.

Hubert will likely have to build most of next year’s team from scratch from the portal. That’s a dicey situation that can have mixed results for even the best coaches who have experience building rosters that way. Should we expect Hubert to put together even a fringe tournament team going that route? I just don’t see it happening.
It's this^^^ for anyone paying attention. Love Hubie to death... but ...

They also were probably bothered by J.R. Reid’s box haircut 38 years ago.
