Not at all sure about today’s game, but on paper it looks to be a 80-75 W for the Heels. But again, not sure at all with this team.
Listening to the Joel Berry interview on IC, he clearly states there is a disconnect from what the coaches are “probably” instructing the players to do, and what they wind up actually doing on the court. Berry insinuates there are no leaders on this team. And if there are any leaders, they are not stepping up in the locker room, in the huddle during timeouts, or on the court.
My observation is that this is no longer RJ’s team. It is now Capt ‘n Jack’s team, and being a freshman, he’s reluctant to take the bull by the horns and lead these guys in all aspects of the game. At practice, in the locker room, at halftime, during timeouts, and on the court.
One very good example is the last game against Louisville. He was the leading scorer, and obviously the go to guy, but he never touched the ball the last five minutes of the game. He, if he were acting as a leader, would’ve insisted that he be gotten the ball. For example, during the last TV time out in the huddle, he should’ve gone to the coaches and the players and demanded “get me the damn ball.” But a freshman doesn’t do that. It’s not in their make up. It’s not in a freshman’s DNA to do that. But that’s when a coach or a team leader like RJ should’ve said that. “Let’s get Ian some touches.”
Joel Berry is suggesting that perhaps that’s exactly what was said, but then it didn’t happen on the court. So there’s the disconnect he’s talking about.
