7-2 doesn't seem exactly realistic either.
Yeah, I agree, unfortunately it is probably not. Still nice, though, to at least have a decently-reasonable path on paper. Clemson and Duke are the only two games left in which we'll be solid underdogs. All of the rest, we should be favored.

It's not as unrealistic as you might think. Looking at kenpom and barttorvik, we're favored by each in 7 of our 9 remaining games (although FSU in Tallahassee is probably a toss up).

If we can just win the games we're supposed to, we're at least solidly on the bubble. If we can be just a tiny bit better than we've been over the last month, we can do it.

Depends on how much we are favored by. If it's something like 60% favorites in those 7 games, I'm guessing our expected outcome would be something like 5-2. I want to believe too, just don't see it happening at this point.

Yeah, both KP and BT have our projected ACC record at 12-8 (meaning 5-3 to close out the year).

But that's not a feel good take, so I'm being hopeful.

Game Day. Pitt Panthers in the house. 4pm on ESPNU (if I’m not mistaken). Let’s go Heels!

It won’t be long now. I trust the PTB to have things well in hand to actually get what we want - and need - once the Portal opens in March. Less than a month away.

A word of advice to Hubert for the remainder of the year: Don’t be afraid to pull a Dean or Roy… and that is: jerk the starting 5 outta the game before the first TV timeout and replace them all… if they don’t come out of the gate with all of the holler and hustle you know they have in them. Take them all out en masse and have them sit on the bench and watch for a while. Which is exactly what both Dean and Roy would do, and which you’ve shown reluctance to try. Just do it. It works.

You know things are bad when that beatdown by Clemson goes unnoticed. Slim chances at the tourney went out the door with that one.

i asked this in the other thread but it's probably more appropriate here. who do y'all want us to hire when HD is done?

The crazy thing is Joe Lunardi and Jerry Palm STILL have us in the first four out in their respective brackets. Palm has us in the top slot, and Joe has third on his list. I admit, I’m not one that follows Kenpom and the net and all those other metrics closely, so it’s mind-boggling to me.

Is it going to be that much better if they do make the tournament and don't get past the second round, or maybe not even the first? Is one good season and one good tourney run good enough compared to two bad seasons, one bad one until the tourney run, and one good season where they were still beat by a higher seed and sent home from the tourney early?

Making the tourney, as a stand-alone issue, is always better than not making the tourney.

Now, if you think that we’ve gotten to a “make the tourney = one more year” vs “miss the tourney = HD fired” situation, that would be a different question.

I don’t think that’s where we are, though, so I’m for us making the tourney however it happens.

I haven't listened to this yet, but Joel and TVipp discuss HD getting another year: Up in the Rafters: The Hubert Davis Question
I've listened to it, it's ok.

I think Taylor is asking the right questions, I've got nothing but respect for Taylor Vippolis.

I've come to realize that no one with any real connection to the program is going to come out and actually say that where we're at is largely HD's fault and that moving on is the right step. I'm sure that's the case for a variety of reasons and I'm not saying I wouldn't share that response if I were connected to the program, but none of these takes are terribly interesting (IMHO) because they're all essentially a repackaging of why HD shouldn't really be held responsible for the state of the program.

Do we really want to make the tournament and lose first round?

Maybe it's an NIT year. Maybe we could win one there.

If this were the old days and we knew the core of this team would be back then more games would help. Considering the modern game, it might be best to get it over with and start recruiting the portal for next season.

I agree. It was meh for me too, at least what Joel was saying. TVipp did ask the right questions. I don't think Joel gave his absolute honest opinion, for whatever reason(s). I don't understand his eluding to it not being because of HD that UNC doesn't already have a GM either. It's pretty well documented that HD was not in favor of having a GM (not sure if he's changed his mind on that, or if admin said it was a must).

It was also Hubert's job to put the team together. So, if you're going to say it's all on the players, then Hubert has to take responsibility for putting together the team he has. I think it's a combination of that and the coaching, which puts most of the responsibility on Hubert. I don't think he does a good job of adjusting, doesn't coach for the team and players he has and tries to force an offense on them that is not situated for the team he has. It worked last year because they had Bacot, but hasn't worked for nearly three other seasons, and it doesn't give the team he has the best possible chance of winning.

University leadership is leaning toward building a new North Carolina men’s basketball arena complex at the off-campus Carolina North location to replace the Dean E. Smith Center after months of consideration, according to multiple sources familiar with the process.

The Carolina North site is located at the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Estes Drive in Chapel Hill, where Horace Williams Airport was located until closing in May 2018.

I can tell you based on some interactions and conversations with people that would be considered "close to the program" including those in media that they are all well aware that their connection to the program would be severed the instant they levy any real criticism. HD is portrayed by those folks I talk to as being exceptionally stubborn and unwilling to accept ownership of any of the shortcomings of the current team or the program overall. Take that for what it is worth.
