I can tell you based on some interactions and conversations with people that would be considered "close to the program" including those in media that they are all well aware that their connection to the program would be severed the instant they levy any real criticism. HD is portrayed by those folks I talk to as being exceptionally stubborn and unwilling to accept ownership of any of the shortcomings of the current team or the program overall. Take that for what it is worth.
If that is the case then I think his days as the head UNC men's basketball coach are definitely numbered. It's one thing to believe in yourself and to believe in your system, it's another to be so blindly stubborn that you refuse to adapt to the team you have and to insist that they stick to your schemes and system that clearly hasn't been effective nearly all season long. It's one thing to be a system coach - Roy Williams was to a great extent - but you need to be flexible enough to work with the team you've got (and Williams was for the most part). If Davis isn't willing to do that then it is unlikely that he's going to be any more successful moving forward than he was this year, imo.

What will it take win wise to get in?
21?
22?
23?
The absolute minimum is 21, but that would almost certainly put us right at the center of the bubble and it could go either way at that point.

We’d likely need 22 to have any sort of confidence.

My most reasonable hope is we go 5-1 to close the regular season and 1-1 in the ACCT (while being respectable in both losses) and that we get into Dayton out of respect for our tough OOC schedule.

We won't get any sort of a benefit of the doubt. I'd say 22 is bare minimum and confidence only comes at 23.

I added a bit after you quoted, my hope is our strong OOC schedule gets us a little bounce compared to the rest of the bubble teams.

The exact situation I lay out puts us in according to Bart Torvik's Teamcast, with a couple of spots to spare and a 52.4% chance of making it.

From an advanced metrics perspective, the fact that we've been rarely blown out helps us a little, especially given our strong OOC schedule.

Our margin is really thin no matter how you look at it.

Thank you for sharing this.

But that gets derailed when there are upsets in conference tournaments to get automatic bids and the number of at-large bids available shrinks accordingly. And it happens every year.

University leadership is leaning toward building a new North Carolina men’s basketball arena complex at the off-campus Carolina North location to replace the Dean E. Smith Center after months of consideration, according to multiple sources familiar with the process.

The Carolina North site is located at the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Estes Drive in Chapel Hill, where Horace Williams Airport was located until closing in May 2018.
They also want to make a smaller arena with more premium seating for donors. Aka a very quiet, very sterile, very boring home atmosphere.

We lose one more regular season game other than dook I don’t see a way in outside of winning the tournament. We are playing some bad teams and any loss would be devastating.
Unless they beat dook…which seems highly unlikely.

If true, super depressing, but kind of a sign of the broader times.

Sure, which is why I originally said we’d be smack in the middle of the bubble and we need 22 wins to have any confidence.

There is a path to the tourney for us simply winning “the games we should”, but it’s a very, very narrow path.

Every season is different so these numbers are relatively meaningless with regard to this season, but the worst records we’ve had and still gotten in were:
18-13 (2000)
19-12 (1990)
18-10 (2004)
18-10 (2021) (It’s funny that the team’s record as of selection Sunday was the exact same in Roy’s last year as it was his first year at UNC, and the year after each of those years the Heels played in the national championship game.)
20-10 (1996)

Of course we did not get in 2023 with a 20-13 record.

I think that’s it - but even more, the bit about being “unwilling to accept ownership”. Aside from being stubborn and unwilling to change your tactics based on personnel, but not taking ownership and not having the buck stop at your desk is the unforgivable act. If that is truly the case. Hubert needs to be put out to pasture. Roy and Dean were the first to say “I was out-coached” or “I didn’t have my team prepared” or some such. Has Hubert ever uttered anything close to that?

I think they're going to have to beat Duke, either in the regular season finale, or in the ACC tournament. There are no games left for them to show that they belong in the tournament. It's going to be hard to pass over teams like UT, who will have a similar record but many more quad 1 wins. UNC will be 1-11 (I think) in quad 1 games if they don't beat Duke. Even then, it's going to be hard to explain why they'd get in over a team with a similar record but better wins. To be safe, beat Duke once, win out the regular season, and make it to the semifinals.

That Stanford loss…
Well, it easily could have been that ND loss, or that State loss. Or to a lesser extent, that GT loss. When you play with fire with bad teams, you are going to lose some of them. Can't really be upset about Stanford, when we got a gift at ND. Win some, lose some.

I have no insider-information, but I can see why this would be true, given his post-game pressers.

True but there’s also the Kansas, Fla, MSU, and Wake losses. Win any of those and things are a bit better.

Stanford is the worst loss at home when things were looking a bit better. That’s the one that caused the most damage.
