CFORDAs a Pell Grant kid whose entire life trajectory was altered for the better by access to higher education, this especially sucks.
From google:I don't see any way Congress approves this, but I'd really, really like to know why the Dept. of Ed needs $248 billion per year.....
And red states will be particularly gutted. The dumbing down of red America will accelerate substantially. From google:
The U.S. Department of Education distributes billions of dollars each year to schools, colleges, and universities. The amount of money distributed depends on the program and the year.
Schools
Colleges and universities
- In 2021–22, public schools received $124.9 billion in federal funds, or $2,536 per student
- The federal government spends nearly $79 billion annually on primary and secondary education programs
- The federal government provides funding through the Department of Education, as well as other federal agencies
- In 2021, the government funded about $174.9 billion for postsecondary education programs
- The Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) provides approximately $120.8 billion in grant, work-study, and loan funds each year
Funding distribution
- Much of the federal funding for education is discretionary, meaning it is set annually by Congress
- Local and state governments typically provide most school district funding
- Public education funding varies significantly across states
States will be absolutely gutted if this funding goes away.
$2536 per student sounds insane. From google:

You do get that there is a huge difference between per student and on each student, don't you? This is infrastructure costs, special programs and such.$2536 per student sounds insane.
Not really. Actually, it should be more.$2536 per student sounds insane.
