One of the major efforts when Orban came to power in Hungary was for his government to gain control of all schools and universities in Hungary, including private ones. They took control of the public school system and rewrote the curriculum to meet with his party's approval. One of the things that was dropped was any mention of LGBTQ people. They also forced all public universities to bend to their will, and they used their control of the government to bully and intimidate private universities into doing their bidding, and they made sure that members of Orban's political party packed the new boards of trustees of public and private universities.

I have no doubt that is the plan here, although it may not be quite as effective given that much of public ed in this country is still under local and state control. Blue states will likely be less affected, red states more. And certainly by gaining complete control of federal funding to universities it will allow Trumpers to bully and threaten even private universities with severe budget cuts if they don't play ball. I suspect that within a year or two there will be severe cuts to public ed in many red states, including NC. I just don't see our state legislature increasing funding for public ed to make up for any cuts at the federal level, at least not until some rural counties in the state are looking at the closure of many of their schools and parents are faced with having to educate their kids at home. That will probably eventually move some to action, although all our legislature would probably do is increase funding for red-voting rural counties while screwing blue-voting urban areas and college towns.

As a Pell Grant kid whose entire life trajectory was altered for the better by access to higher education, this especially sucks.

You have shared your Education story Question?
How come you did so well and likely most of your HS mates did not ?
I contend it was not the teachers-ie your mates had the same teachers.
I contend it was that "something"-friends siblings, parents ? that got you convinced learning was good. And tons of your HS mates never got that from family/peers
Yes Lots of public school teachers in my life. My ex use to practically cry at how many middle schoolers she had that were witty, bright kids but doing school work was just not a life goal Hell she practically adopted some of them-rarely got through
so Big Question How does society change those kids into caring????

Draft of Trump Executive Order Aims to Eliminate Education Department

Secretary Linda McMahon would be directed to ‘take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure’

“… A draft of the order, viewed by The Wall Street Journal, directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Education Department” based on “the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law.”

… McMahon referred to the coming moves in an email to staff Monday night, soon after she was confirmed by the Senate, saying she would “send education back to the states.” She said Trump and the American voters had “tasked us with accomplishing the elimination of the bureaucratic bloat here at the Education Department—a momentous final mission—quickly and responsibly.”

… Fully unwinding the department would require a filibuster-proof, 60-vote majority in the Senate, legal experts have said. The major programs it administers—including money for students with disabilities and student loans—are codified in law and have significant political constituencies. The draft order doesn’t mention Congress. …”

I don't see any way Congress approves this, but I'd really, really like to know why the Dept. of Ed needs $248 billion per year.....

From google:
The U.S. Department of Education distributes billions of dollars each year to schools, colleges, and universities. The amount of money distributed depends on the program and the year.

Schools

  • In 2021–22, public schools received $124.9 billion in federal funds, or $2,536 per student
  • The federal government spends nearly $79 billion annually on primary and secondary education programs
  • The federal government provides funding through the Department of Education, as well as other federal agencies
Colleges and universities
  • In 2021, the government funded about $174.9 billion for postsecondary education programs
  • The Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) provides approximately $120.8 billion in grant, work-study, and loan funds each year

Funding distribution

  • Much of the federal funding for education is discretionary, meaning it is set annually by Congress
  • Local and state governments typically provide most school district funding
  • Public education funding varies significantly across states

States will be absolutely gutted if this funding goes away.

And red states will be particularly gutted. The dumbing down of red America will accelerate substantially.

$2536 per student sounds insane.
