One of the major efforts when Orban came to power in Hungary was for his government to gain control of all schools and universities in Hungary, including private ones. They took control of the public school system and rewrote the curriculum to meet with his party's approval. One of the things that was dropped was any mention of LGBTQ people. They also forced all public universities to bend to their will, and they used their control of the government to bully and intimidate private universities into doing their bidding, and they made sure that members of Orban's political party packed the new boards of trustees of public and private universities.
I have no doubt that is the plan here, although it may not be quite as effective given that much of public ed in this country is still under local and state control. Blue states will likely be less affected, red states more. And certainly by gaining complete control of federal funding to universities it will allow Trumpers to bully and threaten even private universities with severe budget cuts if they don't play ball. I suspect that within a year or two there will be severe cuts to public ed in many red states, including NC. I just don't see our state legislature increasing funding for public ed to make up for any cuts at the federal level, at least not until some rural counties in the state are looking at the closure of many of their schools and parents are faced with having to educate their kids at home. That will probably eventually move some to action, although all our legislature would probably do is increase funding for red-voting rural counties while screwing blue-voting urban areas and college towns.
