Because they didn't develop him into a more impactful player? Did they ever say he was going to be a stud?

Do we know if he was paid more than the typical starting LB? If he was paid a bunch, then his on-field numbers are probably more embarrassing than the fact that he's leaving for greener pastures.

More problematic would be over-paying to keep him. House's PFF numbers were bad, despite leading the team in starts. And if the coaches are completely honest then they are telling him his starting spot isn't guaranteed. I hoped he'd stay and play 2nd-string.
Because he was one of the better players we brought in from the portal last year and was a prime defensive starter for us.

If he was bad enough that the staff felt he should move on, then the staff should be embarrassed they played him so much during the season. If he was good enough that he deserved all the playing time he got, then the staff should be embarrassed that he wants to leave to go elsewhere.

For better or for worse, he was one of the leaders of our defense. With 2 years of eligibility remaining, those are the kinds of players the staff should be looking to keep to build talent & continuity, but he's going back out the door.

This isn't a good sign, the only question is: "How bad of a sign is it?"

You kind of made it a no-win situation, huh.

It could be that House was an extremely talented player who made sense to bring in, but came into the program with an entitled attitude, repeatedly loafed on plays on the field, and decided he was Max Verstappen off the field. He was too talented to stop playing but not necessarily someone you want to pay top dollar to retain.

So another recruiting miss for this staff?

Go figure.

It seems like we paid ~$20mil this year for a completely shitty year plus no foundation to build upon.

It is all relative though. Was he a prime starter because the coaches said he was a stud, or because we have zero LB depth? And just because he was a leader of the D doesn't mean we should overpay for a PFF 50+ player.

ETA - modern cfb sucks, everything's a business. Khmori would probably be a fine situational linebacker or nickel. But without a dominant DL we need all the LB help we can get. Unless he adds 10 pounds and gets much faster and misses fewer tackles i could see other ACC LBs starting over him.

Has there been anything suggesting UNC was asked to overpay?

No. The play sheet is imagine a scenario and criticize it. If we roll with LB on mediocre defense that did not rate well, then what are we doing. If he leaves then clearly failure of the staff me
If House wasn't asking for an amount that would be considered an overpay, then it makes it look all the worse that he's leaving.

He played the most snaps for us this year on defense and was considered a leader of the team. We already have thin LB depth. There's nothing to suggest that he couldn't, at the least, be part of our LB depth for next season, even if we go out and do well at LB in the portal.

He was one of our biggest "gets" out of the portal last year and was trusted enough to get the most snaps on defense this year. Losing that player with 2 seasons left should be considered a huge loss for the program.

I get you reflexively knee-jerk against any critique of Belichick and the staff, but it's ok to admit where things go wrong.

Or he met with staff and they said they were going for a starting LB in portal citing his low grades and also the fact he embarrassed university with all those speeding tickets. I don't know you don't either. My point is the BB critics can spin it either way. I am content to see who leaves, how we do in portal and what kind of roster we have. Meanwhile I am really happy that we had great recruiting haul after 4-8 and all the negatives that come with that.

Exactly! I hate State, but hating someone for saying something truthful you dislike is a pathetic cancel culture type of weakness.
Doeren goes well beyond just saying something "truthful" - he's also basically called our players pieces of shit and said that his players have a better work ethic (blue-collar heroes versus UNC "elites") which is also bullshit. Yes he's beaten us several years in a row now and if he wants to point it out then whatever, but he goes well beyond that to trashing UNC, which is exactly why the Wolpfacts love him so. The guy is a POS who trashes UNC every chance he gets, and the fact that he's beaten us doesn't mean we can't point that out.

ETA: Sorry, just catching up on the thread after long day and didn't see all of the other good responses to his post.

Yes. We did. No "seems" about it. All the same, I'm not sad to see House hit the portal. I'll feel a lot safer on the streets of Chapel Hill next time I am in town.

How many of the 39 signees are enrolling in January?

Given our offensive struggles, the punter signee might be the most important recruit.

36 of 39 is good. Get started on conditioning and nutrition and film study. Here for Spring Practice and the entire summer.

Let’s hope it helps.

My candidates to see early PT (coming from someone who is far from an expert):
- DTs Vodney Cleveland or Viliami Moala - we played fine on the DL this year, but need more beef in the middle
- LBs Calvin Thomas or DQ Forkpa - not a ton coming back, and both have good size/speed
- WR Carnell Warren (Keeyun Chapman is higher ranked, but some speculation he will add weight and convert to TE)
- OL Da'Ron Parks - gotta replace a ton on the OL and seems easier to play early as a guard
- OL Jonah Rodriguez - see above, plus he is older and has experience at least practicing against college kids
- K David Green and P Adam Gibbs - kinda cheating with this guess

Matt Campbell going to Penn State, shortly after Jon Sumrall goes to Florida, is particularly irksome given that those were Bubba's top two candidates of choice last year, and both were highly interested in UNC, until John Preyer, the politicians, and the BOT got involved and torpedoed the search.

Regarding Campbell, I think I remember that he wasn’t going to move until after their season was over, which means you don’t really get a chance to recruit. See Penn States class this year with like 3 commits. And now he has to assemble a staff and put a portal class together in like 3 weeks. It can be done, but seems exceedingly difficult.

I thought Rees was his top target?

Greg pointed out, back during the hiring process, that he didn't think UNC would've invested nearly as much into the program for either of them....or really anyone outside of BB. If that means they continue investing the same going forward then I'd say it will (probably) turn out better in the long-run.
