Because he was one of the better players we brought in from the portal last year and was a prime defensive starter for us.Because they didn't develop him into a more impactful player? Did they ever say he was going to be a stud?
Do we know if he was paid more than the typical starting LB? If he was paid a bunch, then his on-field numbers are probably more embarrassing than the fact that he's leaving for greener pastures.
More problematic would be over-paying to keep him. House's PFF numbers were bad, despite leading the team in starts. And if the coaches are completely honest then they are telling him his starting spot isn't guaranteed. I hoped he'd stay and play 2nd-string.
If he was bad enough that the staff felt he should move on, then the staff should be embarrassed they played him so much during the season. If he was good enough that he deserved all the playing time he got, then the staff should be embarrassed that he wants to leave to go elsewhere.
For better or for worse, he was one of the leaders of our defense. With 2 years of eligibility remaining, those are the kinds of players the staff should be looking to keep to build talent & continuity, but he's going back out the door.
This isn't a good sign, the only question is: "How bad of a sign is it?"
