Sounds like Matt Campbell turned us down. If he’s not coming, I hope that’s the case. That makes hiring Belichick much more tolerable, because the inverse- Campbell being willing to take our job and us not choosing him- is completely and totally unacceptable IMO. Strictly from a program building standpoint I’d still be fine with Jon Sumrall (despite the back to back bad losses) but I also understand why, if Bill Belichick says he willing to take your job, you hire him.

I mean I get where you are coming from, but you are over thinking things somewhat here. It’s Bill Belichick. This would be an unprecedented moment in college sports. Win or lose, it is automatically the biggest story going into the season. For recruiting purposes alone, this is a huge get. He is going to have his pick of transfers, which is good, because he doesn’t have the luxury of time to build from the high school level. But, if part of the deal is to keep his son on as coach after he retires, then he also has the motivation to build a pipeline of recruits for the future.

This is where I am with it too. Would have much preferred Campbell (or Sumrall for that matter), but if Campbell turned us down, it makes the pill a little easier to swallow.

Still, I’m extremely skeptical about how this is going to work out. I’d love nothing more than to eat my words though. So badly want the football program to take a step or two forward.

Campbell seems to have turned it down and there doesn’t seem to be any movement with Belichick at the moment.

I read Belichick wants his son as the coach in waiting.

I, for one, am awaiting empirical confirmation that UNC could literally hire the best coach of all time and the Tar Pitters would still be bitching about it.

1. Very up in the air at the moment whether this hire will happen.
2. Were it to happen, there are very legitimate reasons to be skeptical of a Belichick hire at UNC. The cfb reddit page was probably 75/25 negative on the hire, especially if it included a HCIW designation for Steve Belichick (and redditors are way smarter than average Tar Pitters). He has no college experience. He is very old. He was not hired by any NFL team last year despite multiple interviews.
3. He is an out-of-the box hire, which naturally provokes more extreme positions on the pro and con side. All college football hires are risky, with less than half being successful. This one would certainly also be a risk.

That was a joke. How many times on that board do you think someone has expressed the idea that "you whiners will never be happy, not even if . . ."?

I mean, you gotta admit it is pretty funny for that exact rhetorical question to play out in real life. If Bubba does hire the best coach of all time, which is possible, ttpers will still complain. There's a chef's kiss aspect to this.

The best coach of all time that is 72 years old and whose last couple of years in the NFL were very subpar. And has never coached the college game that is very different from the NFL. Recruiting, limited practice time, fundraising from a famously prickly and grumpy guy. And the age thing too.

Yeah, I can’t see him having any interest whatsoever in doing the schmoozing with alumni/donors that comes with coaching major college sports. And when he is forced to do it, I don’t see it going well.

I wonder if BB is requiring the UNC athletic department to guaranty a certain level of NIL (and to advance any shortfall). And/or a revenue allocation the our admin may not be comfortable with.

That appears to be exactly what is happening, which is a good thing. He wants assurance of our seriousness

If there is guaranty language, I can see the holdup. I’m not an accountant, but would assume that would add a contingent liability to the AD balance sheet and potentially throw a hole in the budget.

If every hire has less than a coin flip's chance of succeeding, how do you not hire Belichick if he's willing to come?

In my opinion, it’s forward looking and the opportunity cost of not hiring Campbell. Although it sounds like he may not be interested.

It would be a once-in-a-generation shock to our athletic department and football culture. I'm willing to give it a try. If it doesn't work, go back to 7-5/ 6-6 and trips to the Mayo Bowl.

Looks like this may not be the case and is more revenue allocation based.
